58th Division, consisting of ‘second line’ battalions of the London Regiment, arrived in France in January 1917. In early February, 2nd 7th London of 174 Brigade were in the front line at Monchy-au-Bois in the northern part of the Somme battlefield, undergoing trench warfare instruction with 46th Division and later that month they took over the front line near Berles-au-Bois. In March 1917 they had spells in the line at Monchy-au-Bois.
George Butcher died of wounds on 23rd March, 1917, after having been evacuated to a hospital in Etaples on the coast. As yet there is no information as to when and where he was wounded |
